What is Maya Abdominal Therapy?

frontpageservicesmayan

Maya Abdominal Massage is a gentle non-invasive, external massage technique that is effective for people of all ages. The combination of techniques works by relieving congestion to improve the flow of Qi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent the progression of chronic disease advances. Maya Massage improves organ function by releasing especially soft tissue physical, and stored emotional congestion from the abdomen. This then guides the internal structures and abdominal organs back into their proper position for optimum health and well being.

In the Maya tradition, all women at puberty were taught how to look after their woman’s bodies. In a session you are shown this process and further more – as part of the therapy the back work – especially all relating to the sacrum is corrected. This alone may make an astonishing difference to your life. It is likely that most conditions can be soothed away alleviated by your working softly and diligently on your belly.

Allied to the Maya techniques, Dr Rosita Arvigo also added the napropathic (village chiropractic from Czechoslovakian) moves. Almost all problems are reduced as the structure is gently returned to normal, allowing optimal nerve, lymphatic and Qi and blood flow to be restored.

The Arvigo® Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapies are offered as a supportive modality to enhance health and wellness. They are preventative and may in some cases need to be supported by your working with allied health care professionals. Reverently working on yourself often will make a considerable difference to all conditions that have previously upset you. In my working with you as an acupuncturist I have the added advantage of fully understanding how the energy and the physical and the emotions all come together allowing easy solutions – working on all levels at once!!

DEFINITION & HISTORY

The Arvigo® Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapies are founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage and other supportive tools. Based on over thirty years of training and experience in massage, naprapathy, herbology, and spiritual healing, Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed these techniques which now bear her name.

This modality incorporates a holistic approach to health, emotional and spiritual healing. Dr. Arvigo believes that with any natural healing technique, these areas must be simultaneously addressed to promote optimal health. Dr. Arvigo learned these techniques from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America with whom she apprenticed for 10 years. Don Elijio passed away in 1996 at the age of 103. Rosita also studied with Hortence Robinson, a 73 year old herbal midwife of Belize who has been delivering babies since she was 13.

DIGESTION & MAYAN ABDOMINAL THERAPY

Maya Abdominal Therapy is a key factor in helping to relax the diaphragm, loosen the tight muscles around the stomach and the arteries that feed the digestive and eliminative organs with their vital blood supply. The digestion works to convert food to energy and basic nutrients to feed the body. With the many anxieties and stuck/repressed emotions held/stored in our body’s tissues and organs.

A very common place is in the organs of the digestive system. Stress messes with our ability to even digest our food – leaving us wide open to all degenerative conditions and discomforts. Poor digestion can affect our overall picture of health as approximately 80% of our immune system cells line the gastrointestinal tract. From a state of low immunity, most symptoms, allergies and degenerative conditions can begin.

Mayan Abdominal work can do for you:

  • Unblock the digestive flows and organs
  • Reduce gut distress
  • Increase assimilation of nutrients
  • Ease all inflammatory and constipation

Often there is a dramatic improvement after just one session combined with proper diet and self care massage.

  • Conditions that benefit
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Low Energy
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Gastro Esophogeal Reflux (GERD)
  • Chronic indigestion or heartburn
  • Gastritis
  • Restricted breathing due to tension

Don Elijio believed that a woman’s centre is her uterus. “If a woman’s uterus is out of balance, so is she,” he would say. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the wandering womb. Most women experience a displaced or tilted uterus at some stage of their lives Often their problems all through their body – including their back aches and leg circulation woes are simply a referral as her uterus is lying where it should not.

How is this therapy helpful for women?

MAYA FOR WOMENThis external massage lifts and guides the uterus into its optimal position in the lower pelvis. The uterus is held in position by over 10 ligaments. These ligaments, when stressed or strained cause the uterus to become mal-positioned or tllted. When this happens, women experience a multitude of symptoms.

What are some of the symptoms of a displaced uterus?

  • Painful or irregular periods; painful or irregular ovulation
  • Dark or brown blood at the onset and at the end of menstruation
  • Headache or migraine with period
  • Varicose veins of the legs and/or tired, weak or numb legs
  • Lower backache; back pain with period
  • More serious imbalances including: Endometriosis, Uterine fibroids and
  • Endometrial polyps
  • PMS/depression
  • Frequent urination; bladder infections, incontinence, incomplete voiding, dribbling
  • Recurrent vaginal infections
  • Chronic miscarriages
  • Difficulty getting/staying pregnant/infertility
  • Painful intercourse
  • Chronic constipation
  • Difficult menopause

What could cause a displaced uterus?

  • Injury to the sacrum or tailbone from a fall, car accidents, etc
  • Pelvic ligaments that have weakened due to overstretching during pregnancy and birth
  • High impact exercise, running on cement surfaces, high impact aerobics, etc
  • Lifting and carrying heavy objects before or during menstruation and too soon after child birth
  • Time and gravity
  • Past surgeries
  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Chronic muscle spasm around the low back and sacrum
  • Emotional armouring from abuse at anytime in life

What conditions can it help?

  • Displaced or prolapsed uterus and/or bladder
  • Incomplete emptying of bladder
  • Painful periods and ovulation
  • Irregular menstrual cycles and ovulation
  • Bladder or yeast infections
  • Miscarriages, difficult pregnancies
  • Endometriosis
  • Perimenopause, menopausal symptoms
  • Infertility
  • PMS/Depression with menstruation
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Enhances pregnancy, aids in labour and delivery

Is it recommended for all women?

“If a woman’s uterus is out of balance, so is she.” If it has been removed – there is a vacuum within that has been filled by other organs and tissues slumping in. Almost every woman, even those who have had hysterectomies can benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Therapies™ through improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and a decrease in the formation of scar tissue.

When we do not do this work:

  • During menstrual bleeding
  • Within the first 6 weeks following a normal vaginal delivery or the first 3 months after a c-section
  • For a woman using an IUD for birth control
  • If cancer is present or suspected anywhere in the pelvis, or the client is undergoing chemotherapy for this condition
  • During the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Hiatal Hernia – gentle touch only

Benefits

Normally the uterus leans slightly over the bladder in the centre of the pelvis, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. It is held in this position by muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are made to stretch to accommodate a growing fetus inside and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full.

The ligaments and muscles can weaken and loosen, causing the uterus to fall downward, forwards, backward or to either side. A uterus in any of these positions is called tilted or prolapsed. Modern medicine has little or nothing to offer women with this problem. Options may include using the birth control pill, muscle relaxants, or surgery and women are generally told, “your uterus is tipped, but that is normal and don’t worry about it.”

Yet women have many physical and emotional symptoms that can be addressed and prevented with these simple, non-invasive massage techniques. When reproductive organs shift, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. Just over half a kilo sitting on blood and lymph vessels can cause havoc throughout the different systems in the body. By shifting the uterus back into optimal place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs.

Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. This is essential for healthy pregnancy, labour, and delivery. Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumours, endometriosis, and caesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by uterine massage.

In addition, structural, digestive, and urinary problems can be helped.

How does it help women who may have immense pelvic pain/dyspareunia/vuvladyna?

Often the congestion has built up from many years of neglect – and sometimes from a single fall or accident, vaccination reaction or operation/sexual incident when we trace it back. We may have imbalanced circulation from a single fall – often in childhood – that sets the entire life on a different course. Sacral and tail bone (coxcygeal) damage is essential to repair – hence the naproprathic and Central American mid-wives techniques as part of the session. Women who have any pelvic pain will feel relieved, over time, through performing the self care massage and using the castor oil packs and taking advantage of the vaginal steams she has been shown in the Mayan session she has with me. There is a reason for the pain. Let’s find out why it is there  .. Gently, naturally undoing the layers of blockages is easy when using the combination of the acupuncture, moxa, cupping vibrational and Mayan techniques I have assembled.

How does it help women who have had a Hysterectomy?

Women who have had hysterectomies benefit greatly from Arvigo® Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapies as well.

The technique improves circulation in and around the area of the scar and allows for proper flow of the lymph, which often becomes blocked after surgery, resulting in swelling, burning and deep aching pains in the pelvis.

By using Maya Abdominal Therapies™ techniques on a regular basis, scar tissue will be prevented from forming in the pelvis after surgery. Ligaments and other remaining organs are benefited from improving circulatory flow to the pelvis.

Fertility

It has been estimated that approx 30% of women who have been unsuccessful in conceiving eventually conceive after a succession of Maya Abdominal Therapy™ treatments. Treatments generally consist of massage, diet and lifestyle modifications, herbal therapies to enhance fertility. An abdominal massage and vaginal steam just before implantation in IVF increases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy – find out more today!!

Once the uterus is in its optimal position, there is improved haemodynamics and homeostasis to support and enhance fertility. Men often are suffering needlessly from digestive woes that impact on their ability to even make good sperm. Their past incidents and accidents and operations may also be reducing appropriate the circulation through their reproductive regions and this needs addressing before conception and the quality of sperm is easy to improve – find out more here.

With all tissues and organs misaligned, easy fertility follows as she is receiving all the flows to fully nourish great ovarian function. Often the results of the AMH are noting more than a report card of how unwell the inner being is presently – and easily remedied with the self care massage and allied homework – all amazingly restorative. Get ready for a baby before planting one in there! This will make the pregnancy and birth so much easier – especially of you have any menstrual or digestive issues as these need to be cleared so a perfect pregnancy result and very simple birth is awaiting you.

HOW DOES IT HELP WITH CAESAREAN SECTIONS?

Untold numbers of Caesarean births could be prevented with this simple, safe, easy to learn massage technique. Our practitioners use this to prevent the need for a C-section. By strengthening and toning the uterus, ligaments and other pelvic organs, the massage helps to place and maintain the uterus in her optimal position for giving birth. Well being of the mother and baby are improved as they prepare for labour and delivery. For women who have had a C-section, this technique is beneficial for breaking up scar tissue in the same way it works for women who have had hysterectomies.

HOW IS THIS MASSAGE HELPFUL FOR MEN?

men_hero2The massage is done the same way for men.

By applying the massage to the abdomen it supports healthy organ function and relieves congestion. The prostate is a glandular organ that rests behind the bladder it has no ligaments to speak of for support. The prostate gland can become congested resulting in early stages of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), impotence (depending on the cause), decreased sperm count and quality, etc.

BENEFITS

Men benefit greatly from The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy™ techniques as well. By ensuring a full blood supply to the prostate, the abdominal massage helps to prevent swelling and inflammation.

Men report that they can feel a distinct difference in blood flow (hence strength of erections) after a treatment. Not only does the massage relieve prostate swelling, but it helps alleviate varicose veins, premature ejaculation, some impotency problems and the need to urinate frequently.

ABOUT ROSITA ARVIGO

FOUNDER OF THE ARVIGO TECHNIQUES OF MAYA ABDOMINAL THERAPY™

Rosita ArvigoIn 1983, Chicago native Rosita Arvigo, a doctor of Naprapathy (D.N.) began an intensive 12 year apprenticeship with one of the last living Maya shamans in Central America. Don Elijio Panti was already 90 years old when Arvigo began to study with him in his tiny, remote village of San Antonio in Western Belize, not far from the Guatemalan border.

Rosita learned about native healing plants, the Maya prayers, herbal bathing for physical and spiritual healing and the ancient technique of Maya abdominal massage, known simply as “la sobada” – the massage. Arvigo watched her mentor’s deft and wrinkled hands massage thousands of abdomens with incredibly impressive results.

Maya women often arrived on the doorstep of this humble clinic in groves and gaggles to have the old bush doctor massage their abdomens for relief of painful periods, headaches, tired legs, infertility and digestive upsets. So impressed with the technique and its deeply healing results, Arvigo spent a decade researching the how’s and why’s of this Maya Massage System.

She applied her knowledge of anatomy, physiology, herbology and her naprapathic training in damaged ligaments to establish a credible explanation of causes, signs, symptoms and successful treatments for both men and women. “Eventually”, she says, “I specialised in ailments of women using these time-honoured bodywork techniques that alleviate and prevent some of our very common complaints. The best part, though, is that it shows there really is an accessible alternative to surgery and drugs for abdominal and pelvis complaints.”

Don Elijio passed away in 1996 at the age of 103. Rosita also studied with Hortence Robinson, a 73 year old herbal midwife of Belize who has been delivering babies since she was 13. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the wandering womb. “If a woman’s uterus is out of balance, so is she,” – Don Elijio Panti

SELF CARE

LEARN HOW TO SELF CARE

Each patient is instructed in performing the abdominal massage for themselves.

By doing self care massage daily it provides all with the ability to improve their health while working with me.

Depending on the severity of the problem, it may take as little as one session and as long as many months for the uterine position to be corrected and for the ligaments to gain enough strength and elasticity for it to stay in place.

Three sessions are usually the minimum.

The Self Care is also effective for the ongoing health regime for all digestive and reproductive conditions.

Both men and women often report a rapid improvement in symptoms and sense of well being when self care is performed regularly.
